List of Top 5 Most Popular Search Engines in the World (Updated 2018)

Top Search Engines: Whenever we used to yearn for any kind of information, we used to rush to the nearest library and check for the information that they had in stock. Even Einstein had said that the only thing that you needed to really remember was the location of the nearest library.

However, times have changed and we have advanced in technology so much that the days are not far when libraries would become obsolete. There will always be people who would prefer actual books over online information, but their number would be just a handful in comparison to those who would just want to click a few buttons on their phones and look things up.

Search engines have become quite a useful tool when looking for information and millions of queries are searched every day across a wide variety of engines. Here is our list for the top picks of the search engines that are used today:

  1. Google:

Google has become synonymous with looking up for information. No longer do we say that search for “something”. Rather than that, we just say Google it.

According to the latest reports, nearly 75% of the total searches were made through Google. It is also the dominating company in the mobile/tablet search engine market. All the phones that come with Android are powered by software from Google and the default search option is through Google.

  1. Bing:

Bing is powered by Microsoft, and it is the company’s attempt to compete with Google. Even though the company has tried for years, it hasn’t been able to come even close to beating Google at the game. There is a stunning 66% difference between the total numbers of searches made between the two search engines.

Microsoft tried to increase the searches by setting the default search engine as Bing for the mobiles and operating systems, but the mobiles did not gain much traction with the Android-dominated market and after the initial installing of Chrome as the browser on the laptops, the default search engine was again chosen to Google.

  1. Yahoo:

While it was bought by Microsoft, Yahoo continues to be a separate platform, only having changed ownership.

Since October 2011, Yahoo is being powered by Bing and yet it has a very low number of searches in comparison to the top dog, Google. However, it continues to be the most popular email service provider.

  1. Ask.com:

Ask.com was formerly known as Ask Jeeves and it accounts for almost 0.05% of the total searches in the world. The platform is based on a question and answer format and most of the answers that a user receives are answered by other users in the form of polls.

The general search functionality is intact but it lacks a flair and quality when it is put against the likes of Bing, Yahoo, and Google.

  1. AOL.com:

AOL.com was popular back in the old days of the dial-up connections. However, over time, the industry has been taken over by the young search engines. The total market share of AOL.com is 0.04% of the total searches in the world.
