There was so much of talk about players retentions for a new season of IPL and after so much talk and discussions, Governing Council (GC) declares that every franchise can retain a maximum of 5 players through a combination of Right to Match cards (RTM) and pre-auction retention.
What is Right to Match Cards?
Suppose a player goes back into the auction and franchisees spend a lot of money to buy him but still at the end, his previous franchisee can retain him by giving last bid with the help of RTM card. For example, Rohit Sharma goes into the auction and all franchisees bid some amount on him but still at the end Mumbai Indians can retain him by matching the successful bid that was made for him with the help of RTM Card.
If franchise retained 3 players from previous seasons squad before the auctions then they can use only 2 RTM cards or if they don’t want to retain any player then they Can Get Maximum of 3 RTM cards. It means franchise can use a Maximum of 3 retentions or 3 RTM cards
The break up must have to be done by the following criterion
- Max 3 capped Indian Players
- Max 2 capped foreign players
- Max 2 Uncapped Indian Players
Now Chennai super kings(CSK) and Rajasthan Royals(RR) can retain their 2015 squad players who played for Rising Pune Supergiant or Gujarat Lions.
It means that CSK can retain,
MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Dwayne Smith, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Andrew Tye, Faf Du Plessis, Dwayne Bravo, Irfan Pathan, Baba Aparajith, Brendon MacCallum
And RR can Retain,
Ajinkya Rahane, Steven Smith, James Faulkner, Dhawal Kulkarni, Rajat Bhatia, Ankit Sharma
The players who were part of CSK and RR in 2015 that were picked by franchisees other the Rising Pune supergiant or Gujarat Lions will go to auction or can be retained by their current franchise. For example, the likes of Sanju Samson and Chris Morris were part of RR and CSK respectively but they both played for Delhi Daredevils last year so they can be retained by DD only and not by RR and CSK respectively or can go into auction.
Ben Stokes and Jason Roy will be sent to Auction directly
Changes in Auctions purse
For new IPL auction 2018 franchisees purse increases from 66cr. to 80cr.
Players retention also will affect the purse of franchisees. If franchisee retained 3 players then they will only have 47 cr. at the time of an auction, it means they will down by 33cr. If they retained 2 players they will have 59cr (down by 21cr.). If they retained 1 player they will have 67.5cr. (12.5cr.) and if any franchise wants to retained uncapped player then will be down by 3cr. for each player.
IPL auction 2018 is going to be a very interesting event and millions of cricket and teams fans are waiting to see who will play In their team in future or want to see for which team their favorite player is going to play.
It is very difficult to predict who which team will retain which player but still according to me following will be the possible retentions for franchisees.
