Recently, the Union Public Service Commission published a comprehensive list that explained what an IAS Aspirant can do during the Mains civil service exam and what they cannot do. To be conducted from 20th September to 29th September of this year, the Mains is the second stage of the clearing IAS. It is also considered one of the toughest parts of the test. It is one reason why candidates regularly flaunt the rules UPSC sets for it. By publishing the lists of do’s and dont’s, the UPSC reminds students of their obligation.
Since not every IAS aspirant goes on the official site of the commission, we thought to explain some of the stricter rules the list mentions. In the article below, you will find some of the essential guidelines for the Mains exam. We advise each civil services candidate to pay heed to them.
Things IAS Aspirants Should Not Do In The Mains Exam
- Under no circumstances should the candidate write irrelevantly on the Question-cum-Answer Booklet. It has been noted that many students write a chant, short prayer, symbol or number on it such as OM, 786 and the cross. These are not allowed. - Only matter relevant to answers can be written on the QCAB.
- Writingthe application number or your own name on the booklet is strictly not allowed. Moreover, any mark or signature the reveals the identity of the candidate is a big don’t.
- An examinee can only write the name and medium of the examination on the QCA booklet. If you are worried about examiners recognising your answer sheets, that is done through the serial number or roll number given on a different page.
- It is advised not to write anything on the margins of the question paper.
- When answering, candidates should stick one medium. Switching from English to Hindi and back is not allowed. The same goes for ink. Avoid answering the paper in part pencil and part ink. Mixed language and mixed inks are not done.
- Statements like ‘please consider the answers leniently’ or “I beg you to mark sympathetically’ are under strict prohibition. The examinee cannot appeal to the examiner, directly or indirectly.
- Bad writing will lead to deduction of marks. Therefore, every test taker is encouraged to use handwriting that is easy to read. Chicken scrawl or script that cannot be read will only end you up with a lower score, which can make a world of difference in the merit list.
- Each question comes with instructions. Not following them is not the right methods. Moreover, giving an answer utterly different from what has been asked is liable for marks deduction. In case of such violation of instructions, the answer is not accepted. Similarly, try avoiding making sketches or graphs that have no connection to the questions.
